Health Care Institution of West Iceland

The role of the Health Care Institution of West Iceland is to provide general and specialized health services in the health region of West Iceland in compliance with current legislation and regulations. The services extends to residents in the region and others seeking them. The Health Care Institution attaches great importance to respect, trust and professionalism.The welfare of patients is paramount.

Health clinics

The Health Care Institution of West Iceland operates eight health care clinics located in Akranes, Borgarnes, Ólafsvík, Grundarfjörður, Stykkishómur, Búðardal, Hólmavík and Hvammstangi.

The health care clinics operate according to Article 4 of Act No. 40/2007 on health services. The services cover general treatments, nursing, preventive measures and health protection, accident and emergency facilities and other services. The following basic services are available in all health centres in the region:

Hospital

District hospital in Akranes
There is one district hospital in the health region of West Iceland placed in Akranes, is has 59 beds and four 24/7 wards
• Surgical
• Gynaecology and maternity/obstetrics ward
• Internal medicine ward
• Short stay nursing ward for patients from Reykjavik area

The hospital has operating rooms 24/7, laboratory, radiology and rehabilitation. There are 6 beds for day-surgical patient care and extensive ambulant services is provided by specialists in the hospital.
A large number of surgical patients and childbirth seeking treatment in Akranes Hospital are from Reykjavik area.

Nursing wards and rehabilitation
In Hólmavík is a small nursing ward with 1 bed for less severe disease, observation and follow up care.
In Hvammstangi is a nursing ward with 2 beds for less severe disease, observation and follow up care.
In Stykkishólmur is a 5-day rehabilitation ward specialized in neck and back problems and a small nursing ward with 4 beds for less severe disease, observation and follow up care. A large number of patients seeking treatment for neck and back problems are resident outside the health region of West Iceland.
